By: Zane Blacquier Well hello there! Thanks for checking out the first post of this new blog, let's start by covering the basics. I'm Zane Blacquier and for the last few years I have had an interest in everything wild. A main focus of mine has been exploring the many different foods. Discovering all the new flavors and learning new techniques has been a great way for me to create a more eco-conscious and sustainable lifestyle. What Makes a Food Wild? You may be wondering what makes a food a wild one? Wild food is generally thought as any food that is un-managed or un-maintained, humans haven't selectively bred the plant and it hasn't been domesticated. Many others and myself included will allow for a few exceptions though. Native Americans were actually known to plant ramp patches and their is evidence of managed Paw Paw patches. So it is known that indigenous peoples managed a variety of plants, depending on the region they domesticated many of them. Some of these plants were managed heavily while others were not. Some of the foods managed more-so than others include the famous 3 sisters (corn, beans, and squash) High Bush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) pictured above is a plant high in nutrients and vitamins, some consider it the super-food in our backyard! Is This Really that Important?
Now you might be wondering, well that's cool but why is it so important? Why should I start eating wild foods? The primary reason people might start eating wild food is the health benefits that occur after eating them. All though not all wild foods have been scientifically examined the ones that have been show promising results of being healthier food sources. The science is coming around and its starting to show that when the domestication process occurs the foods lose quality. foods have been bred to be bigger, taste better, and have more calories. This may seem great but the science also shows that it comes at a cost, the domestication process has also seems to have created a loss in phyto-nutrients and vitamins in the foods we love. Its actually these nutrients that our bodies need. Many people only look at the calories, they need less calories if they want to be healthy, but our bodies need nutrients to run properly. Wild foods not only generally have less calories than domesticated foods, but also have the nutrients that we need! Whats Going on: Anywho thanks so much for pushing though to the end! This is just the beginning, my very first post! In the upcoming weeks I hope to go more in-depth on some of the different ideas presented today. I especially hope to go a bit more in-depth with the science to help all of you get a better understanding this lifestyle and why its important.
